Vanity: Need Recommendations for Conservative Charities
5/16/2018 | Me

I have the opportunity to donate quite a bit of money out of a trust to the charities of my choosing. I used to personally donate to Save the Children until I watched them posting all this Huffpo garbage on their Facebook page. O'Sullivan's Law is a real phenomenon, so I'm looking for some charities that will help those in need but also those that reflect our values.

I was thinking St. Jude's Children's Hospital and The Wounded Warrior Project - any others or better ones that you guys would recommend?

Heya AW...What really sold me on them was the table they had set up in the lobby at Walter Reed, where patients and families could take whatever they wanted off of it...toys, food, movie tickets, books, even iPods IIRC. They didn’t have to pay...didn’t have to fill out forms, and nobody was abusing it.

I loved it.

That wasn’t Fisher House, rlmorel. That was a private charity organized and run entirely by freepers of the DC Chapter, and funded by their personal donations and those of many other freepers from across the country who brought or sent donations of money or items.

I did not know that. Now that says something special...nobody bragged about that, I wish I would have known.

I would have definitely given money to that cause, I was so impressed by it. I wish someone had told me that!

Not that my mistake detracts from Fisher House at all!

Your money, you do what you want.

I used to donate to the Salvation Army...until last year. Then, in one fell swoop by pulling out of the Mar A Largo fundraiser, they committed two unpardonable errors IMO.

1) - They went political
2) - They picked the wrong side.

Ever since, my money has gone to Samaritan’s Purse

Find a trustworthy church. If a charity is competing with tithing, it’s either not really a charity (I could list some great non-profits), or it’s not conservative.

Some great non-profits:
Institute for Religion and Democracy
Newman Society (are you Catholic?)
Christendom College (Catholic)
Hillsdale College (Protestant)

Prior to donating you may wish to exercise due-diligence by investigating where your "quite a bit of money" actually will go and whether the "charity" is truly dispensing it and to whom, or whether they're keeping it mostly in-house. Such 501c3 charities are required to file IRS Form 990 disclosing all those details, including the salaries paid to, and the familial relationships of, the ten most highly-paid officers and employees.

You can view those forms on no-cost charity-checker sites like GuideStar. 990s for 2017 are unlikely to have been filed already, but past years will be visible. (Even USC, my alma mater, must file these as a nonprofit foundation; I use GuideStar to track something as mundane as what they're paying the football and basketball coaches, who are the two most highly-paid staffers.)

I did not know that. Now that says something special...nobody bragged about that, I wish I would have known.

For seven years, the DC Chapter kept our face-to-face ministries inside WRAMC a secret from FR's public Forum for the specific purpose of avoiding the leftists at the gates from demanding access to the wounded. DC Chapter gained access because so many freepers who came out to our counterprotest rallies already had veteran status or military family, and some even had active military ID cards.

One time Cindy Sheehan came to the leftists' Friday night anti-war demonstration at the gates and made a big thing that she was going to go into the hospital and greet the troops. She has a single $2 grocery-store potted plant in her hands as she was dishing this BS to the media — the MSM often sent reporters to interview the Code Pink and Veterans Agains the War traitors demonstrating outside the gates, but always, always pointedly ignored the 15 to 50 freepers across the street with signs honoring the troops and their sacrifices.

So two of the ambulatory wounded soliders who used to come out and chat with us (and who were off duty and dressed in civvies) FOLLOWED her into Walter Reed, observed her set the potted plant on the receptionist's desk, go to the ladies' room, come out again and exit the hospital fifteen minutes later, not having spoken to a single soldier! bwahahahahahahaha! We duly reported it in our weekly AAR here on FR. I wish I could find the URL for that, but in seven years, we published more than 350 AARs, and even "Ms Detail" here failed to keep track of everything.

Both inside the campus and outside on the street was an enormous, sustained effort every Friday night for 7 years in sun, rain, snow, ice, wind, fog, even on holidays—like the postmen of old. But it was one of the best things ever.

Many of the DC Chapter leaders gave unstintingly of themselves, such as kristinn, tgsltakoma, Doctor Raoul, billf, bufordp, concretebob, landry fan, lurker bill, 3D-Joy, mr and mrs trooprally, tom the redhunter, plea deal, fraxinus, yours truly, and many, MANY more too numerous to mention. Literally thousands of freepers across the country read our AARs and commented, or made the trip to DC to stand with us as they were able, and as you did. And Jim Robinson deserves a crown of glory in eternity for it.

I hate to say this but I have heard bad things about the wounded warrior project. Maybe even here on FR. I think there are better charities for wounded soldiers.

It was one of the most rewarding things I have done in my life, to have had the opportunity to spend time with real patriots who care about their country, both in and out of Walter Reed.

You folks...all of you...will always have my utmost respect.

And you are correct, Fisher House does amazing work of a type that volunteers simply can’t do. They are a godsend to any military member who needs their services while being treated for an extended stay at a military hospital such as Walter Reed. Their goal is to keep family members supported and connected, and sometimes also funded, during long hospitalizations.

Thank you very much, Albion Wilde! FReepers are the absolute greatest! And the DC Chapter has performed brilliantly all these years — above and beyond the call of duty! God bless.

Trail Life USA and American Heritage Girls both provide strong outdoor and adventure related character development programs to kids.

Both run on tight budgets and are very fiscally responsible.
