STOKES COUNTY, N.C. — A Stokes County man took to Facebook on Thursday to draw attention to low teacher pay.
In the post, Nick Cols said he has been teaching for 10 years and loves his job but is struggling because he only makes about $1,715 each month.
The English teacher said his hourly pay comes out to be $6.69 an hour, which is roughly $1 less than North Carolina’s minimum wage.
“I know some will look at this and speak to the fact that I get summers off. I do. I get two weeks vacation here and a week there. I do. All of that is true. I, however, do not get paid for those days,” he said.
He goes on to say he and his wife, who is also a teacher, are struggling and “cannot pay for anything.”
Cols continues to say he can’t afford to attend the May 16 rally in Raleigh where teachers are expected to protest at the General Assembly when lawmakers reconvene for the legislative short session.
During the rally, teachers from around the state plan to lobby the legislature for what they say are desperately needed new state dollars for underfunded school systems.
To attend, he would have to take a personal day and forfeit $75 from his next paycheck.
“I want you to see what the people who are educating your children are being paid. The people who are writing Letters of Recommendation,” he said. “The people who are giving them the tools to achieve things that most never thought possible. The people who give themselves daily to wide swaths of kids.”

Is he dividing by 12 months or by the time he actually works??? Three months off should not be divided in - AND he should be working. He actually has a 9-month job and is UNEMPLOYED for 3 months. (Signed, a teacher). I had a mentor who worked at Disneyland during the summers and said a lot of teachers did.
Just Common Core math - he should be using the Real Math.
He says his "$1,715/month" comes out to "$53/day."
- The math (1,715/53) means he works 32.4 days a month.
He says it equals "$6.69/hour."
- The math would mean he works 8-hours/day for all those 32 days a month.
He's an incompetent lying idiot who should be fired and sued for the return of his past unearned "earnings."

Subs earn less than an actual full time teacher...even if they are working full time hours

I wonder if he is counting his job as 40 hours/ week, 52 weeks/ year. It’s not going to prorate well across three months of VACATION.

Good variables to consider, Pepsi. Thanks. The teachers around here always whine too. There’s never enough money for them, the district is always broke BUT the Janitors are in the Teamsters Union and get $50 an hour. Since it is not a business and it is not THEIR money, there’s no real accountability and very little Common Sense.
These “educators “ can take a leap. All they do is whine. All gripe that they are underpaid and over worked. I call BS. Most “work” for about 8 months a year, have excessive benefits and nice retirement plans. Of course, how dare anyone criticize their racket...encase it is always FOR THE CHILDREN .
In Georgia, Teachers start at near $50,000. They get GREAT insurance, GREAT pension, and 2+ months off (not necessarily continuous), plus other great benefits.
Sounds to me like the teachers union is taking a good chunk of his/her paycheck.
I don't think it was ever intended to support a household.
It was something women did before marriage, something they went back to after the babies came and she could have the same calendar as them.
It wasn't never intended to be a lucrative career.
It's probably not popular to say this but it's true.
My monthly take home was $745 in 1993.
Granted, that was after GI Bill was taken out, and room and board was provided at no cost.
No way for a 10 year teacher.

Anyone else who had as much abject failure in their jobs would be fired. I already know that I’m going to hear all of the reasons and I understand them well. Parents suck, teachers unions suck blah blah.
My Father was an educator and during summer break he painted houses.
I remember in high school many of my teachers had "summer" jobs. Our football coach and history teacher also painted houses, I know some who sold insurance, there are things you can do besides sitting around and bitching about the consequences of your life choices.

That is the issue in my opinion. Administration is paid unreal salaries in most districts. In many schools there are several vice principals and other important folks that get large salaries. Most are invisible if you try to reach them, and students never seem to see them so not even sure what work they are busy doing to earn those salaries.
When I was in school we always knew the principal well, he seemed to be everywhere- walking the school, making a point to know the students, keeping up with what was going on on campus- popping in a classroom to observe for a few minutes or longer. The principal made sure teachers, cafeteria staff, and maintenance people had what they needed and did their jobs and the school ran smoothly. The principals used to be paid just a little more than teachers and were earning their money. Everyone used to know what the principle did, now they are usually paid far more and no one knows what they are doing.
Teachers need to be well paid, then we can demand great teachers.
