‘$53 a day’: North Carolina teacher posts paycheck on Facebook to draw attention to teacher pay

STOKES COUNTY, N.C. — A Stokes County man took to Facebook on Thursday to draw attention to low teacher pay.

In the post, Nick Cols said he has been teaching for 10 years and loves his job but is struggling because he only makes about $1,715 each month.

The English teacher said his hourly pay comes out to be $6.69 an hour, which is roughly $1 less than North Carolina’s minimum wage.

“I know some will look at this and speak to the fact that I get summers off. I do. I get two weeks vacation here and a week there. I do. All of that is true. I, however, do not get paid for those days,” he said.

He goes on to say he and his wife, who is also a teacher, are struggling and “cannot pay for anything.”

Cols continues to say he can’t afford to attend the May 16 rally in Raleigh where teachers are expected to protest at the General Assembly when lawmakers reconvene for the legislative short session.

During the rally, teachers from around the state plan to lobby the legislature for what they say are desperately needed new state dollars for underfunded school systems.

To attend, he would have to take a personal day and forfeit $75 from his next paycheck.

“I want you to see what the people who are educating your children are being paid. The people who are writing Letters of Recommendation,” he said. “The people who are giving them the tools to achieve things that most never thought possible. The people who give themselves daily to wide swaths of kids.”

I did it for 25 years. I put in as much times as it took but rarely spent more than 7 hours in the classroom. Some of that was voluntary making my coffee in the morning and doing clean up in the lab in the afternoons.

Dim wit thinks his take home pay is his full pay.

Also he thinks he is entitled to be be paid for the months he doesn’t work.

He has his 9 months pay divided into 12 monthly checks. That’s his choice. If he really wants to be paid for those 3 months, he needs to teach summer school or get a different summer job.

The man is stupid and ignorant. And the FOX article is pretty crappy journalism, also.

If that NC salary schedule applies to the complaining teacher, then it looks like the state and federal government are taking more than half of his earnings in taxes and other payroll deductions, and that does not seem plausible.

Here is some math I have extrapolated from this man’s after taxes pay stub.

Take this pay stub & multiply by 12, then divide by 9 to get his take home pay for the actual months he worked.

Then add 35% to 40% that to cover all of taxes, pension deductions, and medical insurance premiums - which brings him up to his real pay. The man is pulling down at least $3K per month——for the months that he actually works. That means that if he works 45 hours a week during the 9 months (I repeat, the 9 months he *works*), then he he making a little more than $16 per hour. At a job where it is nearly impossible for him to be fired unless he diddles little kids and posts the pictures on the internet.

If he doesn’t want to work the other 3 months a year, that’s his prerogative. The taxpayer owes him nothing for those months of non work.

PS: The above doesn’t include paid sick days and paid vacations. Nor does it include the lump sum he will receive at retirement for the (free) “sick days” he does not take.

The man is a liar and a moron to claim he makes less than $7 an hour.

H*ll, I used to make more than that as a Bartender back in 1992-1994. Plus, I had fun girl bartenders to work with. I bought a new Harley-Davidson Fat Boy with that money; Most of it Cash.

There are so many lies in this story, I have lost track. First, he is NOT paid $53 a day. $1715.81 divided by $53 is 32.3737. How many months have 32 days in them? Second, did he actually work all 32 days? Of course, not! He worked many 20 and he only worked for 9 months of the year. Third, he admits this pay check is AFTER some of his expenses. Fourth, it is AFTER income taxes, both federal and state, as well as medicare, and social security tax.

This is how it works, folks. LIBERALS LIE! They use what ever tactics they want to say how little they get paid and only show that final stat as a tear jerker to gain sympathy and virtue signal.

Liberals are horrible people and should never be trusted.
