Netanyahu praises Netta Barzilai; politicians, soldiers laud her Eurovision win

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu opened the weekly cabinet meeting Sunday with an homage to Israel’s winning Eurovision song “Toy,” performed by Netta Barzilai.

Instead of “boker tov” —  “good morning”–  Netanyahu opened his on-the-record remarks to cabinet ministers with “boker toy.”

Israel’s victory, its first since 1998, means it wins the right to host next year’s finals, which has transformed in those intervening decades into a massive extravaganza with two rounds, tens of thousands of fans, and millions more tuning in around the world.

“These days, Jerusalem is blessed with many gifts,” the prime minister said Sunday. “We received another one yesterday evening, with Netta’s suspenseful and shining victory. The gift was that Eurovision will be coming to Jerusalem next year, and we are proud to be hosting it.”

...

In a 2 a.m. post to Twitter, Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon went all out with a video that showed him viewing the clip for the first time.

“Netta Barzilai and a new embassy — next year in Jerusalem!” he wrote in the post, assuring Barzilai, “I bet on you from the start.”

Just keep bending that arm until the adversary sez "uncle!", or in this case, I guess, "aunt!"

“Those who didn’t want Jerusalem in the Eurovision now get Eurovision in Jerusalem.”

Later, addressing the Foreign Ministry reception celebrating the US Embassy’s relocation to Jerusalem, Netanyahu commented on the fact that the Eurovision hosts mentioned every country’s capital except for Israel’s.

Barzilai ended her acceptance speech in Lisbon with the well-known phrase, “Next year in Jerusalem.”

The song sucked. But then don’t forget, they gave the award award a few years ago to a guy simply because he wore a dress.

“massive extravaganza with two rounds, tens of thousands of fans, and millions more tuning in around the world.”

Millions tuning in around the world??? It’s not “massive”, it’s minuscule. Any interview of a prime minister or president has nearly 10 millions viewers in a single big country like Germany, France or the UK.

Instead of waterboarding, they could subject terrorists to continuous pictures of this chick and continuous playing of this absolutely meaningless song (are there even 20 different words in its lyrics?) and I am sure they would promise to tell anything the interrogator wanted to know if they would just stop this “music”. Ugh. I cannot fathom how this ugly woman and this ugly song won. Sorry, Israel.

I thought Eurovision was for Europeans..kinds like America’s Got Talent is for American Contestants.

Watched the video - well, I guess it’s a big world with something for everyone. Sort of like the illicit love-child of Lady Gaga and Senator Blutarsky.

Some of the dancers were cute, though.

I’d prefer Shai Sol

100% agree. This was Euro trash pop personified. I had to listen to Mozart to cleanse my ears after that.

OK, OK. End waterboarding.

Replace it with “it’s a small world after all” alternating with this for 84 hours....

Eurovision is, I think, some sort of news affiliate network. Any country that has a channel with it can participate. The contest is named after the channel, not Europe although it’s obviously based in europe.

Technically Israel is a part of Asia but on a cultural level while being part of the Middle East it also has a Euro flavour to it as well. I’m not sure why they became part of the Eurovision Song Contest but there are cultural connections to Europe.

"She looks like an obese chicken."

The contest was about singing, though--not bodybuilding. And as we look around us, we know that bodybuilding is rare these days. Our U.S.A. looks like a whorehouse in a pigpen.

After listening to a little bit of the song, though, I don’t like that, either. It’s pretty bad! ;-)
