This wasn’t harsh or extreme except for the “snowflakes” of today who think kids should never be disciplined.

I was given much worse when I was a kid, though by the age of 14, I’d grown up enough and learned to be respectable.

When I was 16 we were at my aunt and uncles house. I had asked my mom to do something and she had repeatedly told me no. I told her to F off. Next thing I knew I was picking myself up off the ground. When I got up she simply looked at me and said.....you’re too big to whoop.
I never did that again. Lol

She is likely a real pill at home too. A half hearted slap on the head and two beats with the belt maybe got her attention. That last soap to the head I’m guessing was because she mouthed off instead of just shutting up. Teenage girls can be a nightmare

The one time my dad lost his temper with me I was 15 and working full time on the farm.
He wanted something done a particular way. I argued with him that I had a better way. He finally told me to do it his way and no more argument.
In the heat of the moment I told him he was just too damned old fashioned and pigheaded to accept that I might know better.
Some time later he was able to pry his fist out of my chest. After that I was able to breathe again, with pain, but I was breathing again.
That was the one and only time he punched me.
I learned.
I never gave him cause to do it again.
We had many more arguments but I respected him.

BTW, it turned out his way was the best way.
Live and learn.
