You may be right. That would appear to be the only explanation.

I could never quite latch on to the AJ thing; I thought that he was pretty much a nut, but he was our nut, if you now what I mean.

I never thought he was our nut; his manner, demeanor, body language, message - all screamed out “AGENT PROVOCATEUR” or at least controlled nutcase opposition withe the purpose of tainting any genuine investigations or concerns. I found him utterly repellent.
