The Kurds got screwed as Kurdistan didn't get realized when the Allies carved up the Middle East after WWII. Unfortunately for them the Kurds' country would have had to come from larger well established nations and that wasn't going to play. That the Kurds are divided ideologically hasn't helped them either and it seems they had problems from a Saddam-era Iraq, Carter's Iran, and anyone's Turkey.

They are good fighters as evidenced recently, but in their History, they also claim Saladin.

You have no idea how happy I was to see your post! Truly! After reading more about the Kurds I'm more confused than ever and PLEASE by all means step in and give your wise information. This is what I've gotten our of my studies so far...its ugly.:^)

The fighting has moved toward the mountains where the large Kurd population lives..actually in the mountains of Iraq,Iran,Turkey and Syria. With the Turks trying to move into the Kurds area and killing the civilians and such..Assad said he would send in military to help fight with the Kurds. Instead of Syrians he actually sent Iranians. That really made it a sticking situation for the US who always back the Kurds. So when hearing the situation Russian wanted to step in for fear of loosing the ground they had thought they had.

Syrians feared that if Turkey got involved the war would never end and the Syrian Military would have no choice but to go fight against Turkey. While on the other hand Israel must go after the Iranians/weapons.

And all these forces are saying they too are fighting ISIS and ISIL. Talk about one big mess! I still haven't a clue why the Syrian soldiers I follow hate the Kurds.
