I think the linguistic chauvinism goes even deeper. My husband’s aunt spoke High German. Her housekeeper of many years spoke Low German. Auntie insisted she couldn’t understand a word the housekeeper spoke (which everyone knew was untrue).
......gonna have to confess to being a linguistic chauvinist as well.
At least I know muhself....sigh.
