After the civil war there were millions of daguerreotypes floating around because so many had had their portraits taken. Now daguerreotypes were printed on glass. Later when the tech had developed to print on paper, nobody wanted the boxes and boxes of glass slides any more and a whole bunch of history went to the dump.
A lot were used to make greenhouses, some have been recovered from them.
