Interesting thing, that 1860 Census. There were over 450,000 slaves in Union states, who remained slaves until the passage of the 13th Amendment, unlike slaves in southern states who were freed at the end of the Civil War.
Plenty of slaves were freed before that. But a eight month wait for the amendment to be ratified versus what could have been an eighty year wait if the Confederates won doesn't reflect badly on the Union.

One method required the rule of law and consent of the governed, and the other was imposed dictatorship.
Which of the two would you regard as the more moral?
