The North already had their black codes. Illinois law explicitly barred blacks from living in their state. (Supported by Lincoln) So did many other Northern states. (Go Peruse Noluchan's postings for exact references to these "black codes" of the North)

The North did in fact direct more hatred at black people than did the South.
