On this day in 1864

Posted on 05/04/2018 6:42:25 AM PDT by Bull Snipe

Leading elements of Union Major General George G. Meade's Army of the Potomac cross the Rapidan River. With a few hours they would clash with General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia in the Battle of the Wilderness. Lieutenant General Grant's Overland Campaign had begun.

Reminds me of the guy who makes up fake anecdotes in lame attempts to defend the indefensible...

I’ve been over this many times, but in case you missed it the first half dozen times I covered it, i’ll mention it again.

Of course you will be willing to produce copies of Lincoln’s secret orders.

black and white documents in front of you. That is what I am looking for. Not your recollections of things that you may have read years ago.

My view of history is based on what has been written, not what has been wished for or assumed to be.

“Spin, spin, spin, ballerina.”

If I had wanted to invoke the image of a whirling motion, I would have referenced the tires on a high-centered F150.

I guess we all write in terms in which we are most comfortable.

Of course you will be willing to produce copies of Lincoln’s secret orders.

I can produce David Porter's statements on the subject, and I think Lincoln's secret orders to Mercer are out there, but to my knowledge, David Porter never released copies of Lincoln's secret orders to him.

David Porter says some of what was in them, but he doesn't provide a transcript.

Now you can either say David Porter is making it up and is a liar, or you can accept what he says about them is true. Which way do you want to go on this?

“the new property owner” Sumter at the time was federal property, regardless of what South Carolinians may have thought. They had deeded the property that the fort was built on to the Federal Government.

A more accurate story would be something like this.
The current government of Cuba decided that they will no longer recognized the legitimacy of the lease for Guantanamo Bay with the Americans. The lease was signed by a prior Cuban government. So the current government of Cuba orders its armed forces to open fire on the American base at Guantanamo bay.

“So the current government of Cuba orders its armed forces to open fire on the American base at Guantanamo bay.”

The Southerners of 1861 were sons and grandsons in the tradition of Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Henry, and the Lees. They fought for government justified by the consent of the governed.

The Castros do not have a legitimate claim to govern under any theory other than they have a majority of the bayonets.

But, go ahead and play the Marxist card.

Same situation as the Confederacy. No one recognized the Confederacy as a legitimate Government, We didn’t recognized the Castro Government as legitimate.

The meme of a spinning ballerina has already been invoked, but you know that. If the tires on your F-150 whirl, you’d better get that checked out. Keep on spinning.

King George III did not recognize the USA as legitimate. The fact that the people from whom power and control is being removed, will refuse to recognize the legitimacy of the people taking back their power, makes no difference under the principles upon which this nation was founded.

"It is the right of the people to alter or abolish it..."

Here is another bit that isn't necessarily relevant, but it is interesting nonetheless.

David Porter's Father, also David Porter, pulled the same trick in the War of 1812. This is a good story.

FALSE COLORS: AN INCIDENT OF THE WAR OF '12.

Seems like I do remember something about that.

Probably was just a member of the supposed in-group trying to influence you to establish a disqualifying out-group stereotype.

In a previous post I taunted you to play the Marxist Card and you have.

I never saw it coming.
