I'm just quoting Heinlein.

In Stranger in a Strange Land, the verb "to grok" gets used a lot. Later in the book, Valentine Michael Smith explains that the literal meaning is "to drink."

In the latter part of his writing career Heinlein was playing around with gnosticism. I would look for the meaning of grok there.
