'She's owed an apology': Father of woman arrested at Alabama Waffle House
ABC News ^ | 4/23/2018 | M. L. Nestel

When a woman dining at a Waffle House refused to pay 50 cents extra for plastic utensils, she ended up tackled on the ground by Alabama police officers,(snip)

A day after bailing out his stepdaughter, Lamar Howard told ABC News he is proud of his daughter's restraint, and had he been with her he wouldn't have been able to control his emotions.

"I would have gone to jail first," he said. "And I might have ended up shot or dead.”

Chikesia Clemons, 25, who goes by "Kiki," sat down near the front of the restaurant, and is then shown on video shot by a friend being aggressively taken to the ground by two Saraland police officers, who pulled on her clothing and exposed her chest.

Clemons' father said that his daughter had dined at the establishment a week before and was given plastic utensils for free.

"Kiki was there with her friend and they had no problem being given the plastic," he said. "That's why when the lady made a big deal about it and said it was 'an extra 50 cents' they complained."

Clemons also asked for Waffle House's corporate phone number so she could call and lodge a formal complaint, shortly after which the situation turned hostile, Howard told ABC News.

(snip)

"I'm sitting here, and you're talking crazy to me," she said, as the cop began to grab her arms. "You're not going to grab on me like that. No."

From here, the friend recording on her phone said, "Come on KiKi, let's just go outside."

As the cop continued to try handcuffing Clemons, another officer appeared.

With her top down, revealing her bare chest, Clemons yelled at both officers: "What did I do? Why are you doing this to me?"

I don't think that is a pic of the 'victim,' and that's certainly not what she wore the night of the arrest.

Is 10 cents per bag reasonable? Doesn’t matter — that’s what the law specifies.

Why do I have the distinct feeling that there was a lot going on/being said/noncompliance/resisting between the “refusing to pay” and the “tackled on the ground”?

I agree. It would be interesting to see video of her behavior between the time she stole the utensils and when the police gently arrested her.

The price is the price. If you don’t want to pay the price don’t take the product.

I’m not talking about plastic bags. And so you understand, .10 each is a greedy ripoff in my option.

Again, if 4 people go eat, ya think it’s reasonable to charge them $2.00 for a couple plastic forks? Really?

What does Waffle House they charge for their napkins???

What does Waffle House charge for condiments on the table, such as salt and pepper? How much for ketchup? Napkins?

Someone pointed out yesterday that the .50 is actually a “TO GO” charge.

To go? What does Waffle House charge for their bags? Or are the customers required to carry the food out in their hands?

It was “take out”...Waffle House has regular silverware for “in-house” diners.

Clemons said she was having trouble breathing, at one point, saying, "You're choking me," which promoted the second officer to respond

The weird wording of this sentence promoted me to comment upon it.

Regards,

The charge may be unreasonable, but I can’t recall going into a business and insisting that I wanted to determine the cost of something.

I don’t know about the bags, but one waitress had a new, Waffle House cap...still in a bag, and I gave her $5 for it.
(I collect caps).

Waffle House has been here in the South for as long as I can remember (I’m 72) and there was never a problem with them until recently.

Well, if they’re charging for plastic forks, they must be charging for their take out bags.

Maybe they should charge for parking too!

I ate at one in Florida with hubby and it made me wonder, if they build a new waffle house do they send a team in to “distress” it and make it look old and worn?
