Busybody Lawyers. Hopefully, the outsiders will get their way. Why make going outside more cumbersome at a time when most young people stay indoors too much, chained to their computers?
But now they'll just be the un-indoors club.
Such a shame with such beautiful landscapes right in the backyard of the campus. Use to ride those mountains and was always in awe. Ham radio would solve the so called communication problem. Heck, I’ve had flat tires deep in the woods and 90% of the time my kit prevailed, and I rode on. Shame.
How did that risk assessment workout with Sandusky?
None of them have a portable radio?
Penn should have been burned to the ground already.

“A key issue for administrators was that the Outing Club frequently visit locations with poor cell phone coverage.”
They could give the snowflakes satphones, or personal locator beacons. LOL
I found a few of them in my attic a few years ago and I showed them to one of my then teenage sons. From his point of view, I might as well have been unrolling the Dead Sea Scrolls.
What if they don’t bring the cell phones at all? Or own them?
Did they stop funding the Gay & Lesbian clubs due to the increased risk of HIV?
So, what say does the school have in anything these students do on their own time off campus?
The students are a bunch of pussies. What is their idea of rebellion? Refusing to eat their peas?
There are pertinent facts left out of the story. If the school contributes money to the club, say no to the money an do as they please.
Had the PS Flying Club back then. We used to take off and fly over the co-ed dorms which were maybe 10 stories high? and watch the girls sunbath naked on the rooftops. It was a good outing.
Good thing Lewis and Clark had 4G cell coverage when they headed west.
Maybe the university risk assessors would allow the Outing Club members to hike around campus under armed guards, as long as they had cell phone service.
If Penn State has any legal liabilities on these outings I can understand why they cancel them. If such is the case they should cancel all sporting activities and in particular gymnastics and football. Many a neck has been broken in these two sports. They have not and will not.
What the hell is wrong with Penn State?
the dangers of the off-campus field trips are still FAR less than the dangers (and damage) to students of what goes on in some college classrooms these days (anti-American
communisticNaziIslamic propaganda and brain-washing)
indeed, the more time the students spend outside those classrooms, the better for them!
“A key issue for administrators was that the Outing Club frequently visit locations with poor cell phone coverage”
This is MADNESS!!!
My granddaughter attended a wilderness type semester in her Junior year of High School——no cell phones for the entire semester——and REALLY rough outdoor camping in the Rockies-—in the winter.
The world has gone nuts!

“Risk Management” is killing common sense in this world.
Oh....I thought is was a club who “outted” closeted gays.....
....and they were shutting down, because there weren’t any......closeted.....
