I’ve never read the books but have watched both series, so I’ve had nothing to compare it to. I like the characters in the show, and am looking forward to the third season. The first season was aired on BBC America, but then they dropped out, and Netflix picked it up.

Yeah felt the same way about the Sharpe tv series shows I saw. Just doesn’t work as movie/tv. There is too much depth to the characters, you don’t have time in movie/tv to tell the story

Any other suggestions for reading?

I am currently reading Jeff Shaara, who is a very worthy heir, to his father’s Civil War series

Just saw this on Wikipedia: "In April 2018, Netflix confirmed that a third series was in production, which would air exclusively on the streaming service, and Bernard Cornwell indicated that he had been offered a cameo appearance.[6]

That would be fun. I wonder what his cameo would be. Taking a non actor and putting them in 900 ad era character is going to take some work

I read a variety of book series...several Medieval mystery series, like Susanna Gregory's "Matthew Bartholomew Chronicles." I've also been making my way through Michael Jecks "Templar Series," and Bernard Knight's "Crowner John" series.

I've also enjoyed Robert McCammon's "Matthew Corbett" series. Eliot Pattison's "Mystery of Colonial America" series. And I've been reading books by Doug Preston and Lincoln Child who write novels on their own, but have also collaborated on the "Pendergast" series, and the "Gideon Crew" series.

I also like the writings of Andrew Taylor too.

Have you ever been to the FantasticFiction site? They have pages on most authors out there, plus lists for New Authors, New Books, Coming Soon, Most Popular, and Top Authors. You can search by author or book too. Many of the authors' pages provide recommendations of books they've read.

Here's the link:

I'm sure they'd find a spot for him, like Marvel does for Stan Lee in every Marvel movie.

I read Shaara’s Gettsyburg series as I was very big into researching the Civil War for quite a few years. Gettysburg was one of my favorite battlefields to visit. Those days are over though, and I’ve moved on to other interests. I gave all my boxes of Civil War research material to the National Guard Museum & Archives in Concord, Mass., because I didn’t want to see all my hard work, time, and money wasted with my kids throwing it all in a dumpster after I die. I was born and raised in NY State. Still live here, but I did most of my research on the 54th and 55th Mass. Voluntary Infantry units, plus kept records of other interesting Civil War stuff I found along the way.

Seriously doubt there were Cajuns at the battle of New Orleans.

I think it quite likely, actually, given that Jean Lafitte operated out of Barataria Bay. French Canadian Catholic settlers had been in that area for some time prior to the War of 1812.

I'm pretty sure Jackson used anyone willing to shoulder a flintlock to fight the British - Acadians included. Surely they had a good reason to fight the British.

Unlike the vast majority of posters here I love France in spite of the fact I’m an Anglophile of Saxon Wessex dna mostly

Given I grew up two hours north of New Orleans I am in all humility an excellent creole food cook

I grew up on mommas knee with my River Road cookbook from time I could read

It’s the best food in America

And it’s mostly French with African and Spanish and native influence

I agree, the menu doesn’t sound appealing to me. I’ve never liked lamb.

Read Allen W. Eckert’s “The Frontiersman” from “Winning of America “ series. The series takes you from roughly the French & Indian War to the closing of the Illinois frontier. I think it was written in the 1970s but it holds up well. As far as I am concerned its only major historical failing is it repeats the Blue Jacket myth of him being a white renegade named Marmaduke Van Swearegen. We now know from DNA testing of Blue Jacket descendants that he was pure Shawnee. Also read his account of the wars along the Ohio “That Dark & Bloody River”. His Tecumseh biography is superb too - “A Sorrow in Our Heart”.

Jambalaya is usually contains cubed Pork roast or chicken and a smoked sausage. Also there should be white beans, a green salad and a roll.
