I was reading a fairly convincing case that the pilgrims really escaped to avoid their children being taken by England’s satanists, it got so bad so quick at the time. That’s why Cotton Mather had zero tolerance for witchcraft.

The middle ages had no tolerance for witchcraft, as a convenient place to put all the bad things happening around them. It took a long time for science to break through fearful thoughts and get people to rationally examine issues.
