Maybe that’s true for the modern era, but it goes all the way back to the Founding. Elites (Illuminati, whatever label we use)were trying to undermine the idea of limited government/self-government from the git-go, IMO. Monarchies were much easier to control, especially since they were already part of the elite bloodlines.
