The pics I have seen of a couple supposed RoG hits all show smoke rising up through the ground afterward.

Is that typical of an earthquake? Or is it evidence in favor of kinetic strike?

All depends on the soil, etc. Eaarthquake in rock or vegetation isn't very dusty. An object falling from the sky, if it's fast enough, with make a crater and throw debris up. Shape of that dust plume is likely variable, depeding on the soil, shape of falling oject.

Depending on what table you use, the TNT equivalent to 5.0 Richter earthquake is from 5,000 to 32,000 tons of TNT. The result of a Rod from God is nowhere near equivalent to an earthquake -- except for what got directly hit.
