I don't doubt Hill wanted him dead or that she would have killed him. But a guy who is truly aware of his limits as a pilot would have cancelled until he had the instructor or gone in Visual Meteorological Conditions (VMC) the next day. It is obvious he could fly, but night overwater even when the weather is of no consequence is another kettle of fish. The fact he wanted an instructor shows he knew that, also that it was in his head when he was flying.
