...can’t do math without a device...

Had to hire a private forester a few years ago to redo our MFL contract. In his 40s, could not calculate 40x whatever the tax rate was without a calculator, was amazed I gave him the answer before he used the calculator (I am mostly innumerate, but I can multiply). Said: “I never could do math in my head.” I said: “This is not math. It is arithmetic.” He didn’t understand the difference.
Did I say he was 40-something? This is not a new problem.
And I know people well over 70 who refuse to read any fiction. Others in the same age range, maybe a bit younger who simply do not read at all. One cited her poor vocabulary. I told her Kindle has immediate dictionary function and what a great way to improve vocabulary. Blank stare. She is in her 50s and computer literate.
The ones you mention who are broke, but can afford tattoos/piercings, also buy pot. I understand it is $400/oz right now? Is that right? Is that the legal states and is tax included? How long does an oz last a moderate user?** SMH.
**not implying you know personally. Just throwing that out there for anyone who might.

Math Ugh! When I was in school we moved a lot and it seemed that every where I went they were experimenting with how to teach it. It left me confused mostly. My husband is my calculator. He is 14 years older, he can do it in his head. So I just use him. :)
As for pot I have no clue, but I would not pay $400 an ounce for anything but gold! (Of course no sane person would sell gold for $400 an ounce at this time).
$400 per oz????
You forgot about the $1000 in munchies
Weed out west is dropping through the floor. Wont be long before its cheaper than tobacco.
When in college in the seventies the functional illiteracy rate < 4th grade reading math, need help with a job application; was at 70% in adults above 18 yrs in Tennessee. Same stats in 2015 in Arkansas, a state that leads the nation in innovative improvements under Govs Huckabee and Beebe, continuing under gov Hutchinson are about 67% illiterate.
This means three out of four people you meet at Wal Mart fall in this category.
The next thing POTUS must get through congress is
1. to triple or quadruple the deduction (create this deduction) for hiring directly from welfare and pay them to learn the job skills the public schools failed to teach
2. To grant follow on triple deductions for the next five years the employee works for the company.
3. Employees keep welfare benefits in place while training not to exceed one year.
4. Loss of job for cause results in termination of parental rights and ineligibility to return to the welfare system.
5. Companies providing day care services (to include after school services for school age children) for employees and/or providing transportation for workers without means of transportation will relief a triple tax deduction each year the services are provided.
It is not the child’s fault their mom/dad choose not to be productive citizens.
Not sure where you are going with that. Im a long way from 70 and recognize that life is far too short to waste on fiction.
This is the point where I launch into a rant about how worthless public libraries have become and why they should be shut down then get all irritated so Ill stop now...
