Another hypothesis I haven't seen put forth on this long and fast running Q thread:
Assad did not want any thawing in the US Russian relationship. Trump and Putin have tentatively agreed to a summit along with Trump's announced withdrawal from Syria. So Assad does a chemical weapons strike without the knowledge or approval from Moscow.

Interesting theory. I don’t know anything. But I know Christians were better under Assad, but the Saudis don’t like him because of a pipeline. The Israelis do t !like him.
Makes sense to me. Whoever/whatever did it (if it is real which apparently it is), wants to embroil the US in Syria, and right after Trump emphatically stated the the US was going to pull out.
