I think they've run a couple of Alinsky-style ridicule trial balloons in the past (Newsweek,Comedy Central), to check the reaction hoping more Americans don't check out Q and failed.
When you see the NYT's starting in on this, it can only spell desperation on trying to quell the Q phenomenon but like you said, it too will backfire.
