= is a powerful symbol.
When I taught math, I would spend 20 minutes on that symbol alone.
When you write that symbol, you are declaring that what is on the left side is the same as what is on the right side.
There is so much gravity to that symbol, that it is hard to overstate.
E = mc^2, the idea that mass and energy were not just related, but that they were the SAME, and under what circumstances is an example.
The symbol means that it is equivalent in every sense, not just equal. Not a substitute, a literal, identical match.
