Extraordinary footage with sound of the Olympic backing into the channel at Southampton March 28, 1928. Olympic was the first of three liners built for the White Star Line with the intention of directly challenging the Cunard Line for supremacy in the trans-Atlantic passenger trade. Unfortunately she was the only one to survive and enjoy a long and profitable career.
Olympic and her next sister, the Titanic, were near twins both outside and in. Many of the photos floating around that allegedly show the interior of the Titanic are actually from the Olympic. For obvious reasons there were not a lot of photos of the Titanic.
Two distinguishing features that maritime enthusiasts might note are that the forward third of Titanic's A Deck promenade (all First Class space) was enclosed to protect passengers from the often inclement weather of the North Atlantic. This was never done on the Olympic. The other rather glaring difference is the number of lifeboats. Titanic carried twenty including four stored on top of the officers quarters. After the disaster Olympic was refitted to carry 64.

Oo! Will check that out thank you! I was aware of RMS Mauritania, but not that one.
Those ships symbolize so much about that period: the British Empire at its peak, the turn of the 20th Century, science, industry, and man’s triumph over the nature and its elements...
And then the iceberg...
Then World War I...
They made a lot of money selling drugs to the Chinese. Much of their wealth came from that.

The other one was sunk during wwi
Britannic was a hospital ship sunk in the eastern Med possibly be an unmoored drifting mine. Olympic had hull stress fractures under the bridge during her maiden voyage so Titanic’s promenade deck was enclosed was to cover up structural reinforcement. Olympic suffered other damage and my favorite conspiracy is that the company swapped her with Titanic in a giant insurance scam .
An insurance scam that cost 1,503 lives?
The California was supposed to pick up the Titanic (Olympic) passengers, but they screwed up the rendezvous. Allegedly.
That’s also one of my favorite examples of bat $%^& crazy fringe nuttiness. Thousands of people would have had to have been involved in switching those ships. And then there is the inconvenient fact that Titanic was hugely under-insured which was standard practice back then. White Star took a huge loss just on the ship. This whole thing has been so thoroughly debunked it doesn’t bear serious discussion.
It’s unbelievable how much money these conspiracy hucksters make off the credulous.
Another conspiracy theory is that it was not purely motivated by insurance. Three millonaires, including John Astor and Levi Strauss, who vehemently opposed the creation of the Federal Reserve (and were essentially blocking it), were killed in the sinking. Soon after their deaths, the creation of the Fed went forward.
Correction: Isa Strauss, and also Guggenheim.
That is fantastic footage. Thanks for posting. The accents of the people sound American to me. I wonder if the footage has been analyzed to determine some of the conversations? I heard a few snippets, such as Thats much further down.
