The Special Counsel’s Office is demanding jail time for a lawyer who pleaded guilty for lying to prosecutors.
On Tuesday, 33-year-old Dutch Attorney Alex Van Der Zwaan asked to avoid jail time in the investigation into alleged foreign meddling in the 2016 election.
Additional court papers urge the judge in the case to incarcerate the accused lawyer.
Last month, Van Der Zwaan pleaded guilty to lying to Special Counsel investigators about his conversations with President Trump’s former campaign aide Rick Gates.
Sentencing is scheduled for Tuesday, April 3, where Van Der Zwaan will be the first defendant to face sentencing in the Mueller probe.

Israel is deploying sharpshooters ahead of expected protests by Palestinians.
In an interview early Wednesday, Israel’s top general confirmed the presence of 100 sharpshooters.
It is expected that thousands of Palestinians will flock to tent cities set up to dispute Israel’s occupation of the Gaza Strip, which Israel ceded from Egypt in the 1967 Six-Day War.
The protests are expected to begin this Friday. They will be spread out over five different locations, and are expected to last six weeks.
The sharpshooters are meant to prevent infiltration of Palestinians into Israel, and they will enforce a “no-go” zone in front of the fence. However, this may not deter the protesters.
“Our main goal is to deliver a message that we will be chasing our right of return,” said protest organizer Emad Salim. “Our dream is to return to our Palestinian cities and villages which our ancestors were forced to leave.”
