So after all these years, it’s 19 light hours away. A few hours short of a light year.
We want to send people to maybe-inhabitable planets around 28 light years away. They’ll need a few rest stops.

Absolutely amazing. Voyager can communicate with us from 13,000,000,000 miles distance. And yet, the average spouse frequently can’t manage much more than a grunt from across the mattress. Go figure!

My Dad was the project manager for the power plant on Voyager 1 and Voyager 2! Those radio waves we are now receiving were created from power generated in his RTGs.
He built the most amazing stuff in his incredible career. RIP, Dad. You would have loved to hear this news.

On Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2017, Voyager engineers fired up the four thrusters and waited eagerly as the test results traveled through space, taking 19 hours and 35 minutes to reach an antenna in part of NASA’s Deep Space Network, at Goldstone, California.

Its one thing for a radio to wake up after all this time, but how is there any fuel aboard that thing to make a thruster fire? And how does a radio signal travel that far without (or with, for that matter) billions of watts? What an amazing machine!
