Look on the map. That route doesn't make sense. I don't believe it. It looks like that wagon train was headed north, not east. Even today with improved roads it doesn't make sense. There has to be more to the story. In those days, the main east/west corridor from Wheeling would have been the B&O railroad or the National Road.

Given that it was “Gold Bars” I’m guessing that they were making a break for Canada via the Great Lakes. Where you gonna fence gold bars?
