Maybe we make too much out of the Roman salute. Maybe not doing it would have been the equivalent to kneeling for the national anthem at that point in German society.
We weren’t there but no Christian should have made the salute. It is a slight possibility that they were told to appear to go along in order not to expose the efforts the Church was making to save the Jews.
