Mexican tourist spots used to be the safe places you could go: not anymore. Cabo, Acapulco, and now Cancun and Playa del Carmen are now off limits.

There’s still Cozumel. But crime has been on the upswing there too, unfortunately.

Its relative.

In the 1960’s Mexico was a danger because the “federales” were crooked. And, if they planted pot on you you would be getting some serious money from mom to get out of jail. In the 80’s I did not go back but friends did and it was likely to have your hotel room ransacked by the staff, or your suitcase stolen at the airport. I did go to Sonora, reluctantly, in the 90’s but it was such a toilet I lasted about 4 hours and left still holding my breath. Today, kidnapped and murdered or ransomed is the risk.

Off limits? Why?

We went to Playa del Carmen a couple of times about 7 or 8 years ago. Even then I thought that it was pretty run down, if you ventured past the resorts.
