I took a summer session at the Tech University back in the mid 60s.
Monterrey was a splendid place to visit and the campus was spotless.
It was before they devalued the peso. I remember those big silver dollar sized 1 peso coins were still in circulation.
Mexican tourist spots used to be the safe places you could go: not anymore. Cabo, Acapulco, and now Cancun and Playa del Carmen are now off limits.

There’s still Cozumel. But crime has been on the upswing there too, unfortunately.
My comment there was specifically referring to the Mandalay Bay shooting for which it seems like a ton of information is deliberately being kept under wraps .....
That's been SOP for the media in Las Vegas for a long time. I lived there for several years and many things happened that just didn't get reported. A cab driver there (originally from New Jersey) once told me Vegas was by far the most violent city he had ever worked in.
Wasn’t Chichen Itza fascinating? Seeing that remains one of my most vivid memories. I think it was around 25 years ago, that I was there.
Its relative.
In the 1960’s Mexico was a danger because the “federales” were crooked. And, if they planted pot on you you would be getting some serious money from mom to get out of jail. In the 80’s I did not go back but friends did and it was likely to have your hotel room ransacked by the staff, or your suitcase stolen at the airport. I did go to Sonora, reluctantly, in the 90’s but it was such a toilet I lasted about 4 hours and left still holding my breath. Today, kidnapped and murdered or ransomed is the risk.
Yes indeed.
Makes you wonder about the technology shared by these early Americans.
Our bus driver insisted on calling it “Chicken pizza.”
One cartel shooting members of another cartel is interesting but not of much concern to tourists. How many tourists have been hurt or killed in Cancun, Cabo, etc? Very few if any. Why? Because that’s bad business for everybody.
Off limits? Why?
I have read that part of the problem Mexico faces comes from its successes in the drug wars. As the major cartels have been broken, less “disciplined” new players have risen to take their places. Smaller and much more violent. The leaders of the old cartels were violent, but they knew tourism brought in big bucks, so the tourist areas were safe. That’s gone now.
Sure... good luck in making that case to potential tourists. "It's ok.....there will be bullets flying about but don't worry, they aren't meant for you!"
I remember the rapes of tourists in Acapulco just a few years ago by armed drug gangs.
Are their alot of undisclosed crimes in Inner Harbor? I know that in DC, when there is a rash of muggings down at the National Mall or other tourist areas, the local media/police go the extra mile to make sure its not reported.
We went to Playa del Carmen a couple of times about 7 or 8 years ago. Even then I thought that it was pretty run down, if you ventured past the resorts.

I went to Acapulco in 1985. We stayed at the Acapulco Princess and were told that we could not wear jeans. Nice place. While there we were told to stay in the city and to not go on the beach after dark. They had the city safely protected for the tourists. Our money was their lifeline. Looks like it is really messed up now.
Maybe one can get one of the bammy/holder f&f rifles for protection..
