I'm not a muzzle loading enthusiast, but they had a tool, a bit like a corkscrew, that screwed into the soft lead ball so you could extract it. Then ream out the packed powder and patch, dry the bore and reload...in the rain? It would be hard enough with a percussion cap rifle but it would be almost impossible with the earlier flintlock weapons.
Bayonets and Bowie knives were much more essential (Reliable) weapons in those days.
