No, it's a very straight line of Authority vs. Liberty—and only legitimate authority can exist in a free society.
Authority must always justify itself. Arbitrary authority—however it's wrapped ideologically—is always illegitimate, and anyone who tries to rationalize it fundamentally misunderstands what true Freedom is.
Once arbitrary law is imposed by one faction and tolerated by others—out of some pressing need, and all in the name of "order", or for the People, or for the children—it opens the floodgates to Tyranny, because in the future, another faction will similarly argue for such "shortcuts".
Such thinking is the slipperiest of slippery slopes, and it must always be rejected on general principle. Tyranny is never legitimate—whether it's rationalized by a sage philosopher, appealed for by a charismatic demagogue, or demanded by an angry mob...
