Just a note:
Back in the day (1960’s), my late father worked for the Federal government in Milwaukee. They were after the mob. The effort took place in a locked room with armed guards at the entry. They went over the books with a fine tooth comb. It took 8 years.
IIRC, it was the Ballesteris. I think a brewery may have been implicated, as well. I actually first heard about it from someone else. Dad never talked about it much except a little bit after the fact, but I gathered it was an accounting operation, for the most part. Probably co-ordinated with field work, but mostly tedious line-by-line analysis in the days before computers and spreadsheets.
