It was originally designed to be a 4 stacker cruiser and was later converted into an aircraft carrier. The large structure behind the Island is the fairing around the 4 stacks.
Fore and aft of that are tall superstructure with fire control features for the twin turreted 8 inch guns vestiges of it's cruiser design.
