Will Smith says Georgia ‘gotta do something about these bugs’

SAVANNAH, GA (Nexstar) — Actor Will Smith showed no fear when he squashed a giant cockroach in “Men in Black,” but he may have just met his match in the insect realm.

Sand gnats.

Smith is currently filming his new movie “Gemini Man” near Savannah, Georgia. He says he’s being swarmed not by his loving fans, but by tons of blood-thirsty sand gnats.

Smith posted a video on his Facebook page Tuesday saying, “I love Georgia but y’all gotta do something about these bugs… I’m just saying y’all need to fix it.”

In case you’re already asking why Smith hasn’t tried bug spray, he says he has, but “the bugs is on that like it’s honey.”

Sand gnats, also known as sand flies or no-see-ums, are blood-sucking insects that live in sandy and moist areas. They are tiny and almost translucent making it difficult to know they’re on your skin, but they leave behind giant red spots after feeding which can itch for several minutes without treatment.

“Gemini Man” is directed by Academy Award winner Ang Lee and also stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) and Clive Owen (Children of Men).

I hear that a combo of beer, Listerine blue mouthwash and Epsom salts repels the little buggers.

They make insect repellant clothing and sprays, maybe someone needs to introduce Mr. Smith to the concept. It may be alien to him, lol.

On every vacation to Honduras, we had to deal with those damn sand flies once we hit the coast. Tried everything, the only product that came close to repelling them was a product called “Cactus Juice”.............I now use it when working outside around my house during mosquito season.

Avon Skin So Soft Bug Guard actually works as a repellant.

Not for sand flies......It makes you smell like a cheap whore and your golfing buddies will laugh at you. (talking from experience)

You probably can’t hit them with a swat anyway. I keep a can of Raid on the kitchen island and when I see one, dose him and let him run off. He won’t get far.

I cut back on the number of palmettos boarding with me when I stopped leaving the dog’s food dish out overnight. Stick in the the fridge. And, as you say, don’t squash them. They’re a nastier mess stepped on than alive.

It works for my sister and her kids with west-coast Florida’s noseeums. So maybe there’s a sub-species involved.

Yep - I hated roaches.

In NC I had "wood bores" (carpenter bees) in various locations on my property. The problem was these are very territorial, and would "dive-bomb" me anytime I was in "their" area.

Marine Drill Instructors use the following on Paris Island to keep the sand flees off.

1/4 cup Skin So Soft by Avon

3/4 cup rubbing alcohol

Spray bottle

Shake bottle well before each use.

So maybe there’s a sub-species involved.

I suspect so since Honduras is tropical and sand flies attack in clouds along the beaches.......

As a side note, our legs would be covered with bites that would itch for a month after returning home and my sister would actually blister up on all hers...........pretty nasty things.

The ones who dive bomb you do not have stingers.

“nothing but head under water.”

used to do that as a kid back in the day when the offshore breezes would fail every August along the S.C. grand strand, and the sand gnats would pour in through the window screens - naturally we were sans A.C. so couldn’t seal up the beach house ...

sounds interesting but how do the gnats get through the cheese cloth? Is the weave loose enough for them to get through?
