Surströmming is not the same thing. Pickled herring is quite edible and not particularly smelly. I grew up in a house with my Swedish grandmother who had been a cook in her younger days, and we ate the pickled stuff often. Surströmming was NEVER on the menu.
I’ll have to look through my family recipes from the old country I bet we have one for that.
