Sad day at Berry: One of the two latest eaglets fell from the edge of the nest and did not survive. Posted on February 23, 2018 by hometownheadlines
One of the key things weve heard from Berry College since the eagle cams went live on the nest behind Krannert Center was that we were seeing nature as it happens. In recent years, weve watched the parent eagles scrap with invaders and other drama.
But sometime later Thursday, the first of the 11 eaglets to hatch in the nest perished. B10 or B11 was poking around the edge of the nest and went too far over the edge. A video was captured showing the curious eaglet on the lip of the nest. And all at once, it vanishes.
The eaglets body was found at the base of the tree. From Facebook:
Dear eagle watchers, we are very sad to report that one of the eaglets fell out of the nest Thursday night and did not survive the fall.
The eaglets hatched Feb. 12 and 13, right on schedule. This was the first time an eaglet has not survived to successfully fledge, that is mature and leave the nest, usually in the first weeks of May.
Berry College Eagles - Eaglet falls from the nest - 02-22-18
This eaglet was only days old, having hatched last week. In previous years these hatchlings have been far less mobile and adventurous at this age. The video is very interesting.
Where was this?
11 eaglets ?

They are counting all the eagles produced by the pair throughout the years. Very misleading.
Certainly didn’t expect to find this sad update while looking for political news!
We follow the bird sites too, and have been watching Berry, among others.
Thank you for posting.
Well, yes and no. There have been 11 from this pair since Berry started following them at this nest a few years ago.
My apologies for not remembering to note that this is Berry College in Rome, GA.
Here is the regular nestcam: Berry College EagleCam

I watched some of the activity but did not see any hatchlings. It seemed to take so much time;)
Sad. Condolences.
So sad! They were doing so well!
But nature happens...
Survival of the fittest is unforgiving. Such is life.
Does anyone know if there be a church service for the fallen eaglets?
By the way, it falls out at 2:12. Pretty dull footage up to that point.
Thank you. We used to watch the eagles in Florida. I will look up the Berry College cam.
I wouldn’t call all those windmills going up nature and I’m sure you wouldn’t either. But they have been destroying birds with regularity. Don’t recall the exact details but vividly remember 40 some adult bald eagles lined up on a floor and they were killed with the kenyan’s approval.
What does this poor eaglet falling from the nest have to do with windmills?
I don’t want to watch it fall.
How did the parent react?
Right now, one of them is ripping some animal apart and eating.
There is another “squirrel cam” thread where everyone is sad. One minute the squirrel is scampering around, trying to find the acorns it had hid (that is SO funny to watch!). The next minute this eagle grabs him and whisks him away!!!
(Comment - I think most of what eagles eat is what they can scavenge and already dead.) They are amazing birds though! In Seattle there was some eagle that had its favorite perch on the bridge. It dove down to the road to get something and got hit by a car and killed. It was in the news, etc.
I think it only took a few days for another eagle to figure out that prime location was vacant.
If I had to come back as an animal, I’d prefer coming back as a house pet, and not a wild animal. It’s tough out there!
