These Chinese military innovations threaten U.S. superiority, experts say

BEIJING — The Chinese New Year began with the traditional lighting of firecrackers on Friday, but the country's military has been working on incendiaries on an entirely different scale.

Over the past year, the nation that invented gunpowder has been rolling out an array of high-tech weapons that some experts say could threaten the global superiority of the United States.

"The U.S. no longer possesses clear military-technical dominance, and China is rapidly emerging as a would-be superpower in science and technology," said Elsa B. Kania, an adjunct fellow at the Center for a New American Security, a Washington think tank.

The Chinese People's Liberation Army "might even cut ahead of the U.S. in new frontiers of military power," she added.

Despite the recent sharp rhetoric from President Donald Trump, analysts say an open conflict between Beijing and Washing is unlikely. Others dismiss the idea that China might soon outpace the U.S. in military power.

"There is serious self-congratulation and boastfulness about China’s real military ability," according to Wu Ge, a military analyst and columnist for China's liberal-leaning Southern Weekly newspaper.

Still, it is clear that significant milestones have been reached by a country that, alongside Russia, is categorized in Trump's national security strategy as a "revisionist power" — a nation seeking to redefine the world along values contrary to America's.

Here are five of China's most eye-grabbing innovations:

President Trump;

This is the reason, I decided to support your candidacy when I heard you (might) run.

I realized you, alone, were determined enough, and big enough, to actually change things. I have supported you since.

It has now been a year. Our trade deficit with China is now BIGGER.

President Trump, please. You won. We all won.

Now, please do something.

Thanks for everything you do, and keep up the great job.

GE (defense contractor) owns NBC.

Stock price is down, trying to drum up some new business.

The idea that China threatens our military superiority anytime in the foreseeable future is ludicrous.

If we stopped all new development TODAY, completely froze, it would take them 40 years to get close.

Without leadership, extensive training, and coordination, their neat toys, which they probably copied, aren’t going to do them much good.

I don’t know if I agree with you, but I do not have a military background.

I do however know a bit about China. Do not underestimate them, at all.

Just posting because I saw your profile, and I must say hello to you. Thanks for your post.

While everyone is focused on Russia, Russia, Russia our other enemies are forging ahead. China being the biggest long term threat.

The chinese are going to eat our lunch. What IP they didn’t outright steal, we handed to them on a silver platter.

US STEM schools student rosters read like a Beijing phonebook. Military and industrial espionage are rampant.

And the most disturbing aspect is that the US is completely reliant on many strategic materials and components now.

The communist chinese wouldn’t have to fire a shot to take over the US.

All they have to do is pull the plug on imports into the US, and block our exports to asia. The EU, russia, and ME would fall in behind them.

Oh please, Voochie; you know better. We are in constant competition with our potential adversaries and the Chinese are just behind the Russian in the advanced military technologies. I doubt very seriously that you'd like to see us lose in a fight against the Chinese.

Sure wish you had spent some time in the service - and maybe would read some technical journals before you decided to become an "expert".

Eventually the Chinese and others will be able to annihilate us (the Russians already can). Perpetual war against everyone will leave us dead.

The problem is that China can concentrate everything it’s got in the western Pacific. But the US can’t do the same. We’ve got forces tied up in Europe (NATO), and in the Middle East.

So can China dictate policy in the western Pacific? No. Can China even issue credible threats in the western Pacific? For now, no. But soon...maybe yes.

Trade deficits widen as your economy booms. In any case, fixing things in one year while doing all of the other things that he has done, and fighting the Swamp, is just not possible.

Trade deficits widen, because EVERYTHING SOLD IN EVERY SINGLE STORE IN AMERICA is made in China.

(almost)

Our economic improvement is not driving the deficit. Chinese unfair trade practices, are driving our trade deficit.

Don’t get me wrong. Trump is the only person I wanted to be president now. Head and shoulders, the man.

But on trade, I have yet to see any movement.
