The National Portrait Gallery on Monday unveiled portraits of former President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama to a very mixed reception.
Even though Barack Obama praised Baltimore-based artist Amy Sherald for so spectacularly capturing the grace and beauty and intelligence and charm and hotness of the woman I love, many critics on social media slammed the rendition of the former first lady.
Their main question: Is that really her? [ ]
For the portrait, the former first lady was painted in grayscale a charcoal color with taupe undertones. Shes seated, with her hair falling around her shoulders, in a bold floor-length dress.
While most agreed the image was striking, Twitter went to war over whether it looked anything like Michelle Obama. The verdict varied widely, from positive responses to confused reactions to concern that the portrait did not live up to the subject.

The portraits of both resemble what third world countries would display of their dictators...
Cheap and Scary.
“grace and beauty and intelligence and charm and hotness”
Liberals are indeed out of contact with reality.
He looks like he is in the woods to take care of personal business.
Mooch is appropriating white culture by straightening her hair!!
Racist!
Yeah— reminds one of those “art” portraits of say, Pablo Escobar. unnaturally long hands all out of proportion to the rest of the perspective (un-forced perspective, at that, although it seems to have been painted from a wide angle lens ground/up view.
I like the painting, but I don’t think it looks anything like her. Obama’s is a better likeness even though a chair placed in a bush is a bit weird.
Michael looks like a clean shaven Russell Brand.

Put Kehinde Wiley in the goog and hit images. Look for decapitated white people.
To paraphrase Fred Sanford...looks like they stuck her face in dough, made a gorilla cookie, then took a photo!
College Art major definitely could do better. This would garner second place at a public high school art fair...maybe. And NOT at a public school with a focus on the arts.
So that’s what an artists rendition of a fat ugly slob looks like.
Looks more like a figure in one of those Central American revolutionary murals. Close enough, I guess.
Forget who the portrait is of for a minute. It is a HORRIBLE painting. Terrible.
>>>with her hair falling around her shoulders<<<
Shouldn’t that say, with her WIG falling around her shoulders?
here are examples from the runner ups. Could have been worse.......................
The portrait is different. Its certainly not traditional. But I don’t think its so bad that it deserves mockery. Personally, I really don’t care who a First Lady gets to paint her portrait or what it looks like. If Michelle picked the artist, which is what all other presidents and first lady’s do, then so be it.
Now the Barack Obama portrait, on the other hand, deserves mockery. He is a president. His portrait should conform to certain norms. Being seated in front of flowers and vines is unbelievably bad — beyond parody.
