There may or may not be a "warp drive" per se.
But it appears to be highly likely true that there is a technology that can 'bend time and space' like one bends a sheet of paper such that the ends are placed close together as the paper forms a "U" shape. And that in such a configuration, getting to a very distant point in space becomes extremely quick.
But then there's the whole issue that the critters may not come from distant planets at all--that THAT is a hoax--that they are evil spiritual entities coming from an evil spiritual DIMENSION.
I wouldn't call it a technolgy, but everyone has heard of such things. They are called black holes and you don't want to be within a million miles of one because they tear the atoms in your body apart while you fall into the everlasting VOID of nothingness inside never to escape again - which is why it is called a blackhole.
And per the equivalence principle if space-time is bent to the degree you describe then the local properties are identical to a very very strong black hole, meaning it is a black hole and the physicist who invtented the technology is now locked inside the VOID he created.
