What YOU should do is go to the restaurant, box and bag your own meals and then cash out. THAT would be appropriate for a cheapskate like you.

That said, I do agree with a lot of the comments above pointing out that in most states restaurant wait staff are exempt from the normal minimum wage.

That is not exactly true. Yes, their base wage is a lower minimum, but they are still required to be paid minimum wage. If they get $2.50 an hour, and only make $24 in tips over an 8hr shift, that comes out to $5.50. Their employer is required by law (federal) to make up the difference between what they were paid, and federal minimum wage. I'm sure some restaurants try to find ways around this, and have no idea on state laws for places that have higher minimum wage than federal. But, legally at least, EVERYONE makes minimum wage. Except maybe some contract work. And sometimes the military.

To think....the person who may have taken 30 minutes of so to box and bag all that only cost $1.50 in wages.

Huh? You do realize that minimum wage for tipped employees is $2.13, not $1.50? And most restaurants pay slightly more than that? (Not much but enough to justify 'competitive wages'.) Some buddies worked at another steak chain, and their starting was around $4 an hour. Way more than your dollar-fifty and change.

My reasoning is that, if you spent $4.50 on lunch, you might as well tip $2, because it’s still nothing, really. (If $2 makes a difference to you, you should be eating lunch at home or packing a bag.) On the other hand, if you’re spending $100, you might as well tip $30, because you’re already putting it on the credit card, even though you know better.

The WHOLE PURPOSE of take out is to NOT have to tip, nor buy drinks - it cuts the cost of ‘eating out’ way down.

Social Media claims another “victim”.

Third one today - teacher in Florida, teacher in New Jersey, and now this one.

When will people learn?

It’s the manager’s fault, not he customer’s. You don’t tip on a takeout order.

You continue to show your ignorance - look up the definition, it doesn’t mean “confused”. How cheap to call somebody sensitive after you insult while showing your own ignorance, calling me cheap and ignorant - and why? ...because I disagree with you on how much to tip on pick up orders (smh). It just makes you a d*ck. I take offense because I give A LOT to charity and you know nothing about me. Your attack was unnecessary.

Ok then Mr. Genius - what is the “correct” amount to tip a place when you order a pick up? I want a percentage with a detailed rationale as to why, a compare and contrast against the service you’d get dining in. My expectation is that nobody will be able to disagree with your articulate and enlightened response.

I do tip for take out but 10-15% vs. 15-20% for eat in. My kids have never had to wait tables but my nieces and other friends’ kids have and it is hard work.

When we get takeout, it’s from places that don’t really have table service, such as Sabor or a mom-and-pop (and grandparents and kids) Chinese place. I’ll remember, though, if I ever get takeout from somewhere that’s oriented toward sit-down dining.

I will feel obligated to pay wages myself When I get to hire and fire staff. And when I get to profit from running the business. Until then, paying the owner’s staff wages is not my job. ( I do pay good money in tips but yes, only for good service. Waiters who ignore my guests at the table or who fail to bring the food or who are rude or insulting do NOT deserve or receive rewards). Tips are a way of saying Thanks. Tips are not entitlements.

Do people normally tip for take-out?

I’ve only done it at an ice-cream stand where the tip jar had a label stating it was for those young ladies’ college fund.

Shouldn’t the cashier or kitchen staff who don’t receive tips anyway be organizing and bagging all the take-out food? Whenever I pick up food from a restaurant I like, the cashier and kitchen staff box up and bag the order. No waiters are involved in the take-out side of the operation, i.e., the cashier and kitchen staff aren’t waiting tables between handling take-out orders.

The church probably assumed that this is how Outback handled their order.
