The ‘insurance policy’ aspect of the Russia meme is more than just about Obama, Hillary, the Democrats, and party politics. It was insurance to prevent Trump from dismantling or substantively changing the hierarchy of the intelligence agencies. They have become entities unto themselves, somewhat independent of the government we elect. That hierarchy has become like ‘Skynet’ (pardon the analogy) - self-aware, paranoid, and willing to scorch the Earth for self-preservation. By saddling Trump with the Russia investigation they were able to get Trump's AG to recuse himself - thus neutralizing/modifying involvement of the DOJ, and are able to tie Trump's hands with the political percussions of firing people from the intelligence hierarchy while this sham of an investigation is ongoing. The arrogance and unconcealed threats of Mudd’s comments are stunning.
