Excuse the vanity but I'm banned from Farcebook for another 2 days and I have to get advice. I had an adjustable bed for sale on craigslist. I get contacted by someone, says he'll send a check and he will have movers come and get it once I cash the check. I get a check today for $2,000 more than I asked for. I contact him and he says the extra is for the movers who are coming to get the bed and that they had to be paid upon pick-up. He says he mentioned this, he never did or I would have refused it back then.
1. No movers work that way, it's always pay upon delivery after an initial deposit.
2. I've heard of people doing this, the sucker cashes the check then some goombas come and demand 10x the amount.
The whole stunk to high hell. I told him I tore up the check, which I did, and the deal was off then blocked his number. Of course he now has my address but I'm in MA and this guy is in NY. I'm loaded for bear just in case.
So was this a scam?
Common craigslist scam where they send you a bad check and hope to get something of value from you before you find out the check is no good. Report this fraud to the FBI, er wait they are too busy spying on and attempting to undermine Trump’s presidency to have any time left to, you know, fight actual crime.
You did the right thing, good for you!
Lots of Craigslist scams.
My 18 year old was looking to by his first car and he wanted a 4WD lifted truck. Got all excited by an older F150 with a diesel for a great price.
He called them and was told to send a check and they’d have the car delivered from Kansas or something. It included a sob story about her dead husband and how he loved his truck and she just wanted to get rid of it.
OK, so her husband owned a really nice but older F150, he’s dead and the poor widow wants to practically give the truck away? I don’t think so. Checked it out and it’s a total scam. My son learned a lesson.
This.
Definitely sounds odd. Hopefully, you took a pic of the check. I’d do a little research on who wrote out the check and give a copy of the check and information to the PD in their city and yours.
Yes, it was most likely a scam. People SUCK!!!! Be careful!
You did the right thing. Tell the local police and you state attorney generals office.
So why were you banned from Facebook?
Also, when you cash the check, they have your bank account.
There’s a reason many Craigslist sellers insist that transactions be carried out in a highly public place, even in front of the police station, in person and cash only.
It’s a scam... just this morning my Sis-in-Law called because she had a piano that some guy was giving away for free as long as the buy wouldn’t sell it. It was his late mom’s. The kicker is that the piano was already being shipped to California and i needed to reach out to the moving company to get it redirected. In the end they wanted a redirect fee of $530 that had to be run through the Booking Agent and I must send it via Western Union. Ugh. I sure would like that time back.
I once received a bank check for an airplane I was selling. It included the cost of crating and shipping it. The check was a fraud. I was saved by an acute bank employee. The answering machine messages the criminal made are a hoot — gave them to the bank for their investigation. Caveat emptor, baby.
The better way to get rid of anything is to put it near the curb with a $100 price tag on it in big letters.
Gone in half the time.;-)
SCAM!
I consider myself a CL expert, even wrote an ebook on it. 100% a scam, the check is fake, it will bounce, they get your stuff for free and you pay them to take it. I once had them send a check for Elmer Fudd and gave them local FBI number, they spent 20 bucks over nighting check.
yep
Yes. It was wise of you to ax.
So there's some good news to this story too I see.
Run a google image search using an image from an item like the CL advertised one, you will often find they are images copied directly from eBay selling/sold items!
Not good enough. It may take some time for the issuing bank to realize it was a washed & reused cashier's check, and then you're totally screwed.
