China and the United States are heading towards a trade war

One of the pillars of President Trump’s election campaign was fixing America’s yawning trade deficit with China. Indeed, he went so far as to call trade with Beijing as China’s “rape” of the US economy. Trump also railed against the “theft” of coveted manufacturing jobs from the American heartland. So it seemed like a trade war was an eventuality.

However, Trump didn’t address the trade imbalance with China in his first year in office. The deficit with China came in at a hefty $344 billion last year. That was only a smidge below President Obama's last year in office and an eye-watering 52% above the 2009 trade deficit.

In his first year, President Trump seemingly tamped down his rhetoric and set aside his campaign promises in order to get Beijing's help with North Korea's belligerent nuclear and missile programs. But the focus on North Korea is now fading and the trade deficit with China is once again coming into focus.

Indeed, President Trump just slapped 30% tariffs on solar panel imports. That's a direct shot at China because it is the world's top solar panel manufacturer and the largest exporter of goods to the United States. And this is likely just the start of many more trade actions that'll target Beijing.

You're posting all your Stats on that and USA supposed production on over valued dollars. Other countries , and especially China have purposefully overvalued the U.S. Dollar precisely so that the currency exchange favors China in their trade war.China is the biggest currency manipulator in history .

China has manipulated it's currency keeping the value of it's currency lower in relation to the dollar by a factor of 10 . It's not really that a worker in china makes $1 an hour it's the exchange rate that is off. many people in the USA make $10 an hour and that's 20k per year and anyone knows that is not enough to survive. but you people actually believe China's workers make $1 an hour or less than 20k. How do you think it is possible for people to survive on $1 an hour if we can't do it at $10 ? Try to survive on $2000 a year and post back then ok? You need a minimum of $2000 a month just to barely survive because rent is $1000 a month. think again. no China does have a bigger middle class than all of America's population , more engineers etc. and their living standards are higher

It's all the the exchange rate. In fact many foreigners use this to their advantage. For example i know personally some Indians who make minimum wage here in the USA but send their dollars to india and have several houses there as a house is 30k there as opposed to 300k here in the USA. And China further manipulates their currency and the dollar to keep the exchange rate in favor of china so that their products can be produced 10 times cheaper than in the USA.

so it's the exchange rate for the dollar that is off making our “production “ 10x more expensive. So if a refinery produces a gallon of gasoline in U.S. dollars that $3 would equal $30 of China electronics but it would look like the USA is "manufacturing" more with that crap gallon of gas because of the manipulated exchange rate.

The dollar in my estimation is over valued by a factor of 10 against many currencies. So your “stats” are off by a factor of 10.

The real production is in tons of steel and number of cell phones china produces. You post your stats in over valued dollars.

China made a plan to steal all the USA industries , tech etc. wealth etc. and they did it . and That link shows how they did it and how much they stole. The USA was on top of he world in 1970 now it's a 3rd world country thanks to people like you and obama and china's evil.

China has a "made in China" policy and they are raming that up even more and plan on destroying what's left of USA industries including steel.

You're missing the point.

Your claim is that China has artificially overvalued the US Dollar for as long as we've been trading. OK. For the sake of this argument I'll accept that.

That has nothing to do with the fact that US manufacturing output has continued to grow. You may think the total dollar value of that output is overstated but you can't deny that the output has grown.

You also seem fixated on steel as if that's all that a developed country produces. What about airliners? Bulldozers? Wheat?

U.S. Manufacturing hasn't grown. Your stats in dollars might be larger but that's fiat currency that is overvalued and inflated which means nothing. It's like saying that real income has grown since the 70’s . it hasn't . It's higher in dollar values but that's cause of inflation.

Employment and actually numbers of products produced as in tons of steel which China produces 10 times more than the USA is actually accurate.

manufacturing as a percentage of employment and GDP etc has declined Drastically . You might think losing 8 million manufacturing jobs when the USA should have gained 10 million is something to celebrate but it's not.

China has waged an economic and trade war against the USA for the last 30 years. U.S. politicians sold out to China too.

Manufacturing employment is declining, debt and the other problems i posted here are increasing. Anyone with half a brain knows there is no getting out of that death spiral now. You are either not an American or a democrat .

Your WTO figures are crap. Which - being the WTO - you would expect.

I get my figures from friends who work at embassies and consulates in China - and from shopping there.

You can get knock offs cheap. But if you want to buy the real deal, across the street from where they are manufactured, expect to pay 3 times or more than what they cost in the States - after shipping and markup. It is all taxes.

If you think the official figures have any validity whatsoever you are terribly naïve. The Chinese government is raping us and laughing while they do it. (I really like the Chinese people BTW)

How did the USA go from the most advanced civilization in history , being on top of the world with most of the manufacturing capability after ww2 with practically all of the rest of the world in the stone age or in rubble .. to now 20 trillion in debt most of it to China and Japan, the USA a 3rd world country now?

After ww2 the USA was on top of the world . Most of Asia and Europe were in ruins. Africa etc. were in the stone age . Most of the world was in the stone Age. Japan and China and U.S. politicians stole all the wealth of the USA which is why the USA is in debt for 20 tillion dollars and most of it to Japan and China.

30 years ago there was nothing in China . The USA built China where we could have built on top of what we had.

The USA doesn’t have to trade with China. The USA can have free trade between states , cities ,companies individuals inside the USA. America first.
