Theres a place for Steven Spielberg, and apparently its on New Yorks Upper West Side in the 1950s. A casting call has gone out for a remake of West Side Story, written by Pulitzer Prize winner Tony Kushner, author of Spielbergs terrific Lincoln screenplay and, of course, Angels in America.
Its a pro-forma casting call because, in the end, the new West Side Story is going to need stars. Big names. And because of the setting and the time we are in, its going to need actual Puerto Ricans or Latinos for the parts of characters like Maria, Anita, and Bernardo. There will be no fudging this in 2018. The casting call says in capital letters: MUST BE ABLE TO SPEAK SPANISH.

Gentle Ben 67-69 was Flipper with a black bear instead of a dolphin
It was fun Disneyish
Same producer as Flipper 63-67
And Daktari 66-69
You could have done worse
Granted it wasn’t quite the caliber of Petticoat Junction or Dobie Gillis but I’m sorry you missed it.....that was a joke btw
Never watched GENTLE BEN.
Never even heard of DAKTARI!
Children's programs weren't exactly high on my list during those years, not to mention the fact that in those "dark days", nobody had a T.V. at college, the T.V.s in the lounge areas were shut off, and we did homework and studied! And then there was work and grad school! And besides which, I wouldn't have watched these shows if I had been younger; not my kind of show.
Now Dobie Gillis...THAT was a show I really liked, as a kid, but had to see the summer re-runs, due to being at boarding school.
I’m guessing Flicka and Mr Ed were non starters....
Yes and I HATED the T.V. LASSIE, so didn’t watch it, after I gave it a try.
Hope the boys are all doing well! :-)
I couldnt stand the tunes in WSS. Insipid and amateur.
>>It is so embarrassing that FREEPERS of all people are so dang ignorate to this. How dang dumb do you have to be to think Puerto Ricans are illegals. I actually had a FREEPER say that those illegal Puerto Ricans in Florida better not vote in November. Stunningly stupid.
My post did not mention Puerto Ricans.
Look, Steve Spielberg should get real. His best days are behind him, having left him years ago. As soon as he yapped openly about his thrilling love for the Democrat Party and the liberal, left-wing, hate America, low life, that make up the core of this useless group of would be American Republic destroyers...his talent & expertise of fine film making went right out the window...never to return.
The Spielberg name, at one time, was surrounded by the bright lights of fame and fortune, but, it all died when the grand creativity of life...slithered away, for his acceptance of life with Big Brother Socialism.
Have you all taken a good close gander and the lousy revenue stream of American made movies? His latest, flick “The Post” with supposed, “Super Stars”, Meryl Streep & Tom Hanks is going nowhere...fast. It is barely reaching its listed production costs, which does not include the tons of money spent on pre-showing advertising.
Nothing is as dead, as an idea, whose time has passed.
Arthur Laurents, who wrote the book for B’way & the movie, in his later years (he was a mean SOB!) decided to have the Sharks sing all their songs and recite all their dialogue in Spanish in the last B’way revivial. For some reason, Stephen Sondheim never said a word about this atrocious idea. He probably didn’t want to tangle with nasty Laurents. Needless to say, the show bombed badly and they tried quickly to replace the Spanish with the original lyrics. By that time, it was over for the revival.
Spielberg, having grown up in CA suburbia never saw a B’way show as a kid. That is why he decided to make the film version of the great British play “War Horse” using...real horses. The movie was an unmitigated disaster and Spielberg made the brilliant observation that “real horses aren’t good actors.”
This idea is a disaster waiting to happen.
Oh, Leonard Bernstein & Stephen Sondheim are insipid and amateur, eh?
Sometimes vox populi needs to put a sock in it before it reveals itself to be ignorant beyond words. Perhaps it was a good idea after all for the cultural right to cede the arts to the left if this is how they think about some of the most beautiful of American music.
Actually, I love your lyrics! You’re too good to be hired by Spielberg.
Somebody here thinks Rita Moreno is Italian. The stupid is strong on this thread. I’m going to say this even if it gets me banned: you can go to Democratic Underground and read more intelligent replies than this. Why? Because they have a stake in popular culture. They know that it is popular culture than wins, eventually, at the ballot box. So they educate themselves in the arts, they go into the arts, they appreicate the arts, while the right sits around and writes things like “Bernstein’s music is insipid and amateur.”
And that is one of reasons this country is doomed.
So, its pretty much the same as my Perfect Strangers reboot idea...
It aint Rogers and Hammerstein, but it is eons beyon Andrew Lloyd Weber.
Honeymooners was a white version of Amos n Andy.
Never seen an Andrew Lloyd Weber musical. Love some of the music, though.
To each his own. Glad you enjoyed it. My opinion is not inherently faulty.
No, it is inherently ignorant.
