Looks like a smart solution. They look better than most old homes in China
Except they’re carved in loess (wind deposited glacial silt) and they suck in an earthquake. I think one of the reasons so few are left is due to 10’s of thousands dying in an earthquake in that region in the 19th or 20th century.
