He collaborated with co-founder Peter Hall on the influential 'The Wars of the Roses' in 1963 and directed 'Twelfth Night,' 'Much Ado About Nothing,' 'Love's Labour Lost' and others, working with Judi Dench, Donald Sinden, Patrick Stewart and other stalwart British actors.
John Barton, co-founder of the Royal Shakespeare Company, has died. He was 89.
The company said on its website Thursday night that Barton had died earlier in the day.

Hope they find a replacement who will revive scholarly and dramatic appreciation for Shakespeare’s inextricable link with Christian theology and the spiritual currents and disputes of his day. Instead of focusing on the postmodern-Freudian psychological interpretations of his plays.

I haven’t thought of the RSC since the late 80s. It went off the rails a long time ago when it lost the Barbican Center. Undoubtedly, one of the greatest theater companies for many years.
Out, out brief candle. Life is but a walking shadow. A poor player, who struts and frets his hour upon the stage, and is heard no more. A tale, told by an idiot. Full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.
It's nice being able to see the RSC in London, but it's even better in Stratford-upon-Avon.
