Well he/she is an idiot.
Most wild animals who freeze to death are usually weakened by malnutrition first so that they cannot maintain adequate internal body temperatures. Apparently, "frequently" was not frequently enough to prevent the species from surviving to present times. However, that isn't the point.
The point is that human temperature tolerances are not the same as the temperature tolerances of most animals. Temperatures at which humans become uncomfortable will usually cause no discomfort to most pets. They are generally much more temperature tolerant than we are.
I have had tenants leave lights on and heat up so their CATS wont be afraid.
Cats! Who like it dark and cold and will curl up in the nicest of ways to stay warm and comfortable.
companion animal?
seriously?
I think that this is a terrible end, but companion animal?
Pet wont do?
That's my experience, too. Every dog I have ever had has exceeded its breed's typical life expectancy and usually by a lot. They were almost always outside but always had adequate food, water, and shelter. When temperatures were at an extreme, extra measures were taken including bringing them indoors. Dogs (and cats) aren't quite as delicate as some people think.
Mentally ill homeless people with little or no judgment should not be out in this or any other kind of weather. Time to be responsible and take custody.
I have a feeling that that wont happen until a lot more have been killed off.
Still better equipped to deal with it than human beings are. Our temperature tolerances and our pets' are not the same. By all means, these pets should have shelter that is adequate for them. I'd take more precautions in cold weather with a German Shorthair Pointer than I would an Alaskan Malamute.
I have a friend who is a dean at one of the top vet schools in the country. He has dozens of pampered pet stories that are just unbelievable. He always says that Chester, his dog, is his best friend but he never forgets that Chester is a dog and not one of his kids. Chester sleeps in a doghouse unless it is bitterly cold.
No where did I say that or anything like that, I was simply pointing out a fact which I see was lost on you doofus!
A Labrador Retriever is a short-haired dog who can spend hours in icy water and cold duck blinds with no ill effect. Many short haired breeds are pretty cold tolerant, particularly the hunting breeds. Not that they shouldn't have shelter but they are pretty robust breeds that can handle temperature extremes well.
I have a Norbottenspets like this, and they love COLD but damn anyone who lets any dog die, like that!

That is true. But a dog chained up can’t always get to a place suitable to keep himself warm and watered.
I often wonder how deer survive the cold.
It amazes me me in weather like this when trek through the pines and see where a deer has been bed down over night.
They clear a spot of snow and get as close to the earth a psiible and curl up in a ball till dawn when they head out to eat my Azelias
The people responsible for the deaths of these dogs should be severely punished. My correction of what I believed was a misstatement was not intended as some form of an excuse for them.
“It is illegal to let a dog freeze but homeless humans its ok!
Thanks for the “Doofus”, it’s a lot nicer than what I usually get called! When you say “but homeless it’s OK” what is your point? Insufficient funding for Homeless Services? Not enough jobs available? Why don’t you clarify for me and any other doofus’s out there?
That’s a very difficult issue. In big cities there are typically ample shelter facilities available, but they are not pleasant places and many homeless would rather be in the street. Which is why leftist city administrators always struggle with “ordering” the forcible pickup of unwilling homeless during freezing weather. Any blanket “authority” to force them into shelters could be a dangerous precedent for everyone....would anyone “on the street” be required to show proof of residence to the Police or else be forced onto a shelter, maybe along with some mandatory mental evaluation? Nobody wants to see homeless suffering outside in the cold, but if the “cure” is mandatory street sweeps, the cure might be worse than the disease.
