A bit off topic, but in many ways Napoleon reminds me of Hitler. Both brought great suffering and death to Europe. So yeah, I never quite understood the romantic fascination some folks have with Napoleon.

Well, he was pretty much the only general in France to have a claim to real success since Charles Martel/The Hammer...

If you read the thoughts of non-French writers of the period you get the same idea. Napoleon was considered in his day every bit as bad as Hitler later on. Which is not to say that the “Final Solution” was not uniquely evil. Just that it was largely unknown/unacknowledged (take your pick) until very late in the war.
